Spotlight on Extreme Heat

Two Events Advance Science and Solutions
As extreme heat continues to pose a growing threat to communities across the US, the NSF NCAR GIS Program recently hosted two events aimed at deepening understanding and strengthening response strategies.

The Research Symposium: Human and Geographic Dimensions of Extreme Heat and Heat Risk convened researchers from across disciplines to explore the complex interplay of physical, social, and behavioral factors that drive heat vulnerability. Held June 23–24, 2025, the symposium featured keynotes, paper presentations, and collaborative discussions on topics ranging from urban infrastructure and compounding hazards to communication strategies and governance.
Following the symposium, selected participants took part in the GIS Workshop: Exploring Extreme Heat Risks through Geospatial Storytelling, where they received hands-on training in tools such as ArcGIS StoryMaps, Dashboards, and Experience Builder. This immersive workshop highlighted the power of geospatial storytelling to make heat risks more visible and actionable.
Both events emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary research, innovative methods, and clear communication in building heat resilience.
A sincere thank you to all attendees, presenters, and collaborators who made these events a success.
These events were made possible with support from the National Science Foundation.
